PM to inaugurate B'luru airport's T2 on Nov 11, flag off Vande Bharat train

PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport's Terminal 2 on Friday, November 11. The new terminal has been built at a cost of ₹5,000 crore. PM Modi will also flag off south India's first Vande Bharat Express to serve the Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru route. He will also unveil the 108-feet-tall bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.

 

Nirav Modi loses appeal as UK High Court orders extradition to India to face the law

The High Court in London on Wednesday ordered diamond merchant Nirav Modi's extradition to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering, amounting to an estimated USD 2 billion in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case.

Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay, who presided over the appeal hearing earlier this year, delivered the verdict.

The 51-year-old businessman, who remains behind bars at Wandsworth prison in south-east London, had been granted permission to appeal against District Judge Sam Goozee's Westminster Magistrates' Court ruling in favour of extradition last February.

Netherlands Turns Top Buyer of Indian Petro-Products Amid Ukraine War 


The Netherlands has emerged as the top destination for India’s petroleum product exports such as petrol and diesel in the first half of the current fiscal year. This change comes in the wake of the Ukraine war, with India continuing to buy discounted crude oil from sanctions-hit Russia.  This bump in exports has also resulted in the Netherlands becoming the third biggest market for India’s overall exports, thereby replacing China. China is now displaced to the 4th position, accounting for just 3.3% of total outbound shipments.


Ghaem-100 Satellite: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launches New Satellite-Carrying Rocket 


Iran’s powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard launched a new satellite-carrying rocket, seeking to demonstrate the hard-line force’s prowess even as anti-government protests rage across the country.  The Ghaem 100, Iran’s first three-stage launch vehicle, will be able to place satellites weighing 80 kg (180 pounds) in an orbit 500 km (300 miles) from the earth’s surface, IRNA said.  Amirali Hajizadeh, the commander of the Guard’s aerospace division, which developed the Ghaem-100, said the rocket would be used to launch Iran’s Nahid satellite for the Telecommunications Ministry.

Uttarakhand Foundation Day 2022: 9th November 


Uttarakhand Foundation Day is observed on November 9 every year. Also known as Uttrakhand Divas, it is celebrated to mark the establishment of the 27th state of India. Uttarakhand did not come into existence with India’s independence. It is one of the newer states that was created under the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000.  The name Uttarakhand is derived from the Sanskrit dialect which literally means ‘Northern City’. On January 1, 2007, its name was changed to Uttarakhand. The state is an amalgamation of culture, ethnicity and religion and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in India. The border states of Uttarakhand include Tibet, Nepal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.


Vadodara issued first-ever municipal bond 


Vadodara became the second city in India to issue a municipal bond with assistance from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Technical Assistance.  The US Embassy and US Treasury officials joined counterparts from India’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the city of Vadodara, and the Securities and Exchange Board to celebrate the successful issuance of Vadodara’s first-ever municipal bond. Pune was the first city to issue such a

bond in 2017.


Kerala becomes 1st State to Introduce Uniform Gold Price Based on Bank Rate 


Kerala becomes the first state in India to launch uniform gold prices based on the bank rate. The decision to introduce a uniform price on 916 purity 22-carat gold has been taken at a meeting between officials of Malabar Gold and Diamonds and key members of the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association.  Being a top gold-consuming state in the country, Kerala can set the stage for a countrywide roll-out of uniform gold prices.  The selling price of gold should be unified everywhere in the country. The gold rate should be uniform across the country based on the bank rates.  Gold is priced at Rs 150-300 per gram extra over the bank rate. In Kerala, gold used to be sold at different prices on a particular day.

Pakistan to get $500 million from AIIB for development program

Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said that Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will give $500 million to Pakistan as co-financing for a development program. The fund will be used for Asian Development Bank's Building Resilience with Active Countercyclical Expenditures (BRACE) program to counter the social fallouts of economic crisis. Dar said, "The fund will be received in November."


Zuckerberg explains why Meta fired 11,000 staff, says 'I take responsibility'

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took responsibility for firing over 11,000 employees. He said he predicted the accelerated e-commerce growth would continue after Covid and Meta significantly increased its e-commerce investments. "Not only has e-commerce returned to prior trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be lower," he added.


What changes is Meta making to cut costs after firing 11,000 employees?

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who laid off 11,000 employees, said the company will extend hiring freeze through Q1 and shrink its real estate footprint to cut costs. Meta will transition to desk sharing for people who already spend most of their time outside the office. "We've cut costs across our business, including scaling back budgets and reducing perks," he added.


Russia orders withdrawal from Kherson, only regional Ukrainian capital it held

Russia's military has been ordered to pull out of the Ukrainian city of Kherson, the only regional capital it captured after invading Ukraine in February. In televised comments, General Sergei Surovikin said that it was no longer possible to supply Kherson city. Ukraine reacted with caution to the announcement, saying some Russian forces were still in Kherson.


IMF to give Bangladesh $4.5-billion loan to stabilise its economy

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday reached a preliminary agreement with Bangladesh to give the country a $4.5-billion loan to stabilise its economy. The amount is expected to be disbursed in seven instalments till end of 2026. "We are getting the loan just the way we wanted," said Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

Justice DY Chandrachud to Take Oath As New Chief Justice of India


Senior-most Supreme Court judge and Chief Justice of India-designate Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud is all set to become the 50th head of the Indian judiciary when President Draupadi Murmu would administer the oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhawan.  Justice Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, was elevated to the top court on May 13, 2016.  He has been part of several Constitution benches and landmark verdicts of the top court including on matters relating to the Ayodhya land dispute, the right to privacy and adultery. Justice Chandrachud was also part of the benches which delivered path-breaking judgements on decriminalising same-sex relations after it partially struck down Section 377 of the IPC, the validity of the Aadhaar scheme and the Sabarimala issue.


Adidas appoints Bjorn Gulden as CEO of the company


Adidas has appointed Bjorn Gulden, the CEO of rival Puma, as its new chief executive, and he will take over the German sportswear brand in January as the company.  Gulden will replace Kasper Rorsted, Adidas’ CEO since 2016, whose departure was announced in August. Puma, which like Adidas is based in the southern German town of Herzogenaurach, said its chief commercial officer, Arne Freundt, will replace Gulden as its CEO.

BEE, SIDBI to Jointly Promote Energy Efficiency Financing for MSMEs


The government body for energy efficiency Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for MSMEs.  The MoU will aim to promote energy efficiency financing for MSMEs and explore the internet of things (IoT)-based solutions, greening MSMEs, capacity building of various stakeholders, etc., BEE said.  To encourage MSME units to undertake energy saving investments in plant and machinery to reduce energy consumption, enhance energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions, and improve the profitability of the units in the long run.


LIC Buys Additional Stake in Voltas for Rs 635 Cr


Life Insurance Company (LIC) has increased its shareholding in Voltas by buying an additional 2 per cent stake. The state-owned life insurer increased its shareholding from 2,27,04,306 shares (equivalent to 6.862 per cent) to 2,93,95,224 (8.884 per cent) in Voltas. LIC said it acquired Voltas’ shares worth Rs 634.50 crore through open market transactions during the period from August 10 to November 4, 2022. The transaction was carried out as an open market purchase at an average cost of ₹948.31 per share in Voltas.

SBI commits to finance 1000 entrepreneurs in Nagaland 


SBI commits to finance 1000 entrepreneurs in Nagaland through a partnership with Business Association. The State Bank of India (SBI) in collaboration with the Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has decided to help 1000 entrepreneurs with financing.  An MoU has been signed between the two parties to facilitate ease of doing business and finance MSMEs of Naga entrepreneurs in the state, reported Eastern Mirror.  The NIIE trade fair culminated positive impact with huge promise and commitment to finance 1000 entrepreneurs through the iconic signing of an MOU between SBI and BAN, which will bring hope and huge respite to the genuine entrepreneurs of the state.

Indian Navy participates Malabar Naval Exercise in Japan 


India is participating in 26th International Malabar Naval Exercise begins in Yokosuka of Japan. In the Malabar Naval Exercise, Australia, Japan and the USA are also participating. The naval forces of these countries will take part in the exercise till the 18th of next month. Indian Naval Ships Shivalik and Kamorta are ready to demonstrate at the event.  The presence of these indigenously built ships of the Indian Navy at these multi-national events will be an opportunity to showcase the ship-building capabilities of Indian Shipyards.  The MALABAR exercise was initiated in 1992 between the navies of India and the United States.  The International Fleet Review will be reviewed by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and will see the participation of 40 ships and submarines from 13 countries.


DRDO launches testing, evaluation facility for sonar systems of Indian Navy


Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) launched the Hull Module of the Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization & Evaluation (SPACE) facility at Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) Kochi.  It is a state-of-the-art testing and evaluation facility for sonar systems developed for use by the Indian navy onboard various platforms which include ships, submarines, and helicopters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled India’s logo, theme and website for its presidency of the G20, which reflects the country’s message and overarching priorities to the world.  The G20 logo, created with the four colours of India’s national flag, comprises of earth sitting atop a lotus. The seven petals in the logo signify the seven seas and the coming together of seven continents at G20 India 2023.  The earth reflects India’s pro-planet approach to life and from this, it derives the theme of G20 India 2023 – “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

Pakistan break world record for winning most T20I matches against a team

Pakistan on Wednesday broke the world record for winning most T20I matches against a team. Pakistan's victory in T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final was their 18th victory against New Zealand in T20I cricket. Pakistan overtook England, who have recorded 17 victories against Pakistan. They also overtook India, who have recorded 17 wins each against Sri Lanka and West Indies.


Pramod Bhagat-Manisha Ramadass won gold at BWF Para-Badminton Championships


Pramod Bhagat and Manisha Ramadass won gold medals in singles at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in Tokyo. The reigning Paralympic gold medallist Bhagat beat compatriot Nitesh Kumar 21-19, 21-19 in 53 minutes in an all-Indian SL3 final.  This is Bhagat’s fourth World Championships gold in singles and sixth overall in the marquee event.  Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar went down 21-14, 18-21, 13-21 to Indonesia’s Hikmat Ramdani-Ukun Rukaendi in the SL3-SL4 men’s doubles final.  Manisha Ramadass beat Japan’s Mamiko Toyoda 21-15, 21-15 in half an hour in the SU5 final.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the latest legends who join the prestigious list of cricketing greats that make up the ICC Hall of Fame.  Following a voting process that included existing Hall of Famers, media representatives plus senior executives from the Federation of International Cricketers (FICA) and the ICC, West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, England Women’s team legend Charlotte Edwards and Pakistan legend Abdul Qadir become inductees number 107, 108 and 109 respectively.

Janaki Ammal), India’s first woman botanist.  The book, published by Enview Research and Development, was released during the event organised on the 125th birth anniversary of E. K. Janaki Ammal. She was born on 4th November 1897 in Thalassery, Kerala. The event was organised by the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (CBC) under the Botany Department, University of Kerala.

An American technology giant, Google has launched a platform that displays flood forecasts, namely ‘FloodHub’. This platform shows the area and time where floods could occur, in order to inform people about the natural calamity and authorities can assist them with effectively.  The technology giant has also expanded its AI flood forecasting services to 18 counties across Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. To recall, these flood forecasting services supported by AI were first introduced in India back in 2018.

National Legal Services Day is marked every year on 9th November to celebrate the commencement of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 which came into force on this very day in 1995.  This day was established with a mandate to offer support and help to weaker sections of society including Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, women, disabled persons, natural calamities victims, and human trafficking victims.
