PM awards honorary doctorate to 79-yr-old music maestro Ilaiyaraaja

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday presented an honorary doctorate to 79-year-old music maestro and Rajya Sabha MP Ilaiyaraaja at the 36th convocation ceremony of Tamil Nadu's Gandhigram Rural Institute. PM Modi also awarded an honorary doctorate to 86-year-old instrumentalist and Padma Vibhushan recipient Umayalpuram K Sivaraman. The two personalities are renowned musicians of southern India.

 

 

Centre Unveils India's First National Repository for Life Science Data

India's first National Repository for Life Science data was unveiled by Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh. The National Repository for Life Science data was generated from publicly-funded research in India.  The 'Indian Biological Data Centre' (IBDC) was established at the Regional Biotechnology Center. It has a storage capacity of four petabytes and is also home to the 'Brahm' High-Performance Computing facility.  The Centre also hosted an online 'Dashboard' for the genomic surveillance data generated by the INSACOG labs.  These INSACOG labs provide customized data submission, access, data analysis services, and real-time SARS-CoV-2 variant monitoring across the country.  Data submission and access to the portal for other data types are under development and would be launched.
IBDC is committed to the spirit of data sharing as per FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles.

PM Modi flagged off first ‘Vande Bharat’ train in South India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express Train on the Mysuru-Chennai route at Krantiveera Sangolli Railway station in Bengaluru.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi also flagged off the ‘Bharat Gaurav Kashi Darshan’ train which is operated by Karnataka’s Muzrai Department under the ‘Bharat Gaurav’ train policy of Railways.  In the South, India’s 5th Vande Bharat Express Train is the first semi-high-speed train.  The Vande Bharat Express Train is unique in terms of speed and other modern technological facilities, which will help reduce travel time giving a new experience to passengers.  PM Modi will also unveil the 108-feer bronze statue of the city’s founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda called the ‘Statue of Prosperity’.  He will also inaugurate the Terminal 2 of the International Airport on the outskirts of Bengaluru which is built for ₹5000 crores.

Saudi Arabia Commits $2.5 bn for Middle East Green Initiative

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said, the kingdom would contribute $2.5 billion to a green initiative in the Middle East over the next ten years, and host its headquarters.  The Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, will also aim for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the crown prince said in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, as world leaders gathered for the COP27 climate change conference.  Saudi Arabia plans to rely on renewables for 50 percent of its electricity generation by 2030, the crown prince said, removing 44 million tons of carbon emissions by 2035.  The Middle East Green Initiative was launched by the crown prince last year with the aim of reducing carbon emissions from regional hydrocarbon production by more than 60 percent.

IMF to Provide $4.5 bn Loan for Bangladesh to Combat Economic Crisis

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provisionally agreed a $4.5-billion support programme for Bangladesh, with the country’s finance minister saying the deal would help prevent economic instability escalating into a crisis.  Bangladesh’s $416-billion economy has been one of the world’s fastest growing economy for years. But rising energy and food prices, sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, along with shrinking foreign exchange reserves, have swelled its import bill and current account deficit.  It became the third South Asian nation to secure a “staff-level agreement” with the IMF for loans this year, after Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Odisha government observed 10th November as 'Millet Day' in the state

The state government of Odisha is observing 10th November 2022 as ‘Millet Day’ in the state. The day is chosen according to the Hindu calendar, the 1st thursday of margasira month.  The primary aim of celebrating the day is to promote millets as a highly nutritive and eco-friendly food product. The initiative started in 7 districts, till now the mission has reached 19 districts of Odisha so far. Besides, the government aims to promote the millet mission across 30 districts of Odisha.  Traditionally, millets formed a substantial part of the diets and cropping system in the tribal areas of Odisha. Millets require less water and are more resilient to climate vulnerability. To revive the inclusion of millets in the diet, the Odisha government launched the Odisha Millet Mission (OMM) in 2017.

Ramesh Kejriwal elected new president of All India Rubber Industries Association

All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA) has announced that it has elected Ramesh Kejriwal as its president and Shashi Singh as the senior vice president. Kejriwal will play a key role in leading forward the road map of the apex body for rubber industries in the country.  Prior to being elected to this position, Kejriwal was a Managing Committee Member of AIRIA and has previously served as the Eastern Region Chairman. Ramesh Kejriwal will be succeeding Dr. Sawar Dhanania and will play a key role in leading forward the road map traversed and etched by the last two preceding Presidents of the Association.  The All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA) is not for profit making body serving the rubber industry and trade with the objectives of safeguarding and promoting interests of the industry. AIRIA is  serving industries for last 77 years and in these 77 years there were many presidents who made efforts and sincerely served AIRIA.

Finance Minister Approves India’s First Sovereign Green Bonds Framework

Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman approves the final Sovereign Green Bonds framework of India. This approval will further strengthen India's commitment towards its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) targets.  The Framework comes close on the footsteps of India's commitments under Panchamrit as elucidated by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, at COP26 at Glasgow in November, 2021. The approval is fulfillment of the announcement in the Union Budget FY 2022-23 by the Union Finance Minister that Sovereign Green Bonds will be issued for mobilising resources for green projects.  It will help in attracting global and domestic investments in eligible green projects. The proceeds generated from issuance of such bonds will be deployed in Public Sector projects which help in reducing carbon intensity of the economy.

Indian Army Organises Mela to celebrate Diamond Jubilee of Battle of Walong

Indian Army organizes fair/mela in continuation of Diamond jubilee celebrations of Battle of Walong in Arunachal Pradesh. It is part of the Diamond jubilee celebrations of the Battle of Walong to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Army while defending the Indian territory against the Chinese aggression of 1962.  The Mela aims to familiarize the public with the Indian Army and to encourage a sense of belongingness and togetherness.  The Mela conducted at Walong encompassed a variety of scintillating sports and games events.  The profuse response of the residents during the Mela is a tribute to the sacrifices made by Bravehearts to ensure peace in the region and also ensure its territorial integrity during the war with China.

Indian Army launches 'Veerangana Sewa Kendra' for Veer Naris

Indian Army launched a single window facility "Veerangana Sewa Kendra" (VSK) for the welfare and grievances redressal of army wives. The "Veerangana Sewa Kendra" project was inaugurated by the President Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) at the premises of the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV) premises located at Delhi Cantt.  "Veerangana Sewa Kendra" will be available as a service to the Indian Army Veterans Portal.  The systems cater to registering grievances with tracking, monitoring, and regular feedback to the applicant.  Veer Naris will have multiple means for approaching the VSK through telephone, SMS, WhatsApp, Post, E-mail, and walk-ins to seek assistance.  Stakeholders can monitor the status of grievances through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software.

Bihari Puraskar to Noted writers Madhu Kankaria and Dr. Madhav Hada

Noted writers Madhu Kankariya and Dr Madhav Hada were awarded the 31st and 32nd Bihari Puraskar, respectively. Kankariya was awarded the Puraskar for her 2018 novel ‘Hum Yahan The’ while Hada was awarded for his 2015 literary criticism book ‘Pachrang Chola Pahar Sakhi Ri’.  The awards to the writers were given by Indravardhan Trivedi, vice-chancellor of Mohan Lal Sukhadia University in Udaipur during a program at the university premises.  The Bihari Puraskar is given every year for an outstanding work published in the last 10 years by a Rajasthani author in Hindi or Rajasthani.  The recipient is chosen by a selection committee headed by chairman Hemant Shesh.  The Bihari Puraskar is one of the three literary awards instituted by KK Birla Foundation in 1991.  Named after the famous poet Bihari, the award for Rajasthani authors carries a cash prize of ₹2.5 lakh, a plaque and a citation.

Govt Declares Census, NPR Database As Critical Information Infrastructure

The government has declared certain databases related to the Census and the National Population Register (NPR) as critical information infrastructure. In a notification issued recently, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the decision was taken after exercising the powers conferred to it under the Information Technology Act, 2000 (Amended 2008).  The Centre declares the computer resources relating to the Census Monitoring and Management System, the Self Enumeration and Civil Registration System (CRS) web portals, mobile applications for house listing, population enumeration and updating the NPR as critical information infrastructure (CII) of the office of the registrar general and census commissioner, it said.  The linked databases, including the NPR database, the Census database and the CRS database, the computer resources set up and installed at the National Data Centre, the office of the registrar general and the census commissioner, Delhi, the Disaster Recovery Site and the data centres at Bengaluru and Lucknow have also been declared as CII, according to the notification.

Mother Tongue Survey Of India Is Ready

The Ministry of Home Affairs has successfully completed a mother tongue survey with field videography of 576 languages and dialects across the country. According to the annual report of the home ministry for 2021-22, it has been planned to set up a web archive at the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to preserve and analyse the original flavour of each indigenous mother tongue.  The Mother Tongue Survey of India (MTSI) project is successfully completed with field videography of 576 mother tongues," the report said. The home ministry said the Linguistic Survey of India (LSI) is a regular research activity in the country since the 6th Five Year Plan.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20: Mumbai beats Himachal in final to clinch maiden title

Domestic giants Mumbai produced a near-perfect performance to beat Himachal Pradesh by three wickets in the final and won their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy title at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The 15th edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a Twenty20(T20) competition that is played in India, was held from 11th October 2022 to 5th November 2022.  Put into bat first, Himachal posted a total of 143/8 in 20 overs with Ekant Sen (37 off 29) top-scoring for them. In reply, Mumbai chased down the target in 19.3 overs with three wickets in hand. Sarfaraz Khan scored 36 runs and Tanush Kotian claimed three wickets, which paved the way to win the trophy.

Holger Rune won men’s singles 2022 Paris Masters title

19-year-old Danish player, Holger Rune has defeated the six-time champion, Novak Djokovic to clinch his first Men’s single, 2022 Masters Title in Paris. He has become the youngest winner of the Paris tournament since Boris Becker in 1986.  He is the fifth first-time Masters winner this season and will be the first Danish man to break into the top 10. While the Men’s double was won by Wesley Koolhof (Netherlands) and Neal Skupski (United Kingdom).

India's Virat Kohli becomes first batter to score 4000 runs in T20Is

Indian star cricketer, Virat Kohli has scripted history as he became the first batter in history to reach 4000 runs in T20 Internationals. Kohli reached the landmark in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 against England in Adelaide.  Earlier, Kohli became the all-time leading run-scorer in the men's T20 World Cups against Bangladesh in Adelaide, overtaking Mahela Jayawardene's record of 1016 runs, which was set in 2014. Kohli, remarkably, raced to the magnificent milestone while batting at an average of 53.34. He is the only batter in the shortest format to average over 50 and reached the milestone in 115 matches.

India to host Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2023

India to host the IBA Women's World Boxing Championship 2023. In a press conference held in New Delhi, an MoU was signed between the International Boxing Association (IBA) and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). The MoU was signed in the presence of IBA President Umar Kremlev and BFI President Ajay Singh. The occasion was also felicitated by world champion Nikhat Zareen.  BFI and IBA will work to introduce the historic bout review system at the Women's World Boxing Championship 2023.  The Women's World Boxing Championship 2023 will see a total prize pool of approximately INR 19.50 crore and the gold medalist will be awarded approximately INR 71 lakh.

Nation celebrates National Education Day on 11 November

The National Education Day is observed annually on November 11 in India. In India, National Education Day is celebrated every year on November 11 as it marks the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who was India’s first education minister after independence. He was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously, India’s highest civilian honour in 1992.  The day is observed to celebrate the work done by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the education sector during his tenure as the education minister. In 1920, he was elected as a member of the foundation committee to establish Jamia Millia Islamia at Aligarh in UP. He also assisted in shifting the university campus from Aligarh to New Delhi in 1934. Now, the main gate of the campus is named after him.  This day is celebrated to acknowledge and honour Maulana Azad's contribution to the country's education system. The theme for National Education Day 2022 is “Changing Course, Transforming Education.”

World Usability Day 2022: "Our Health"

Every year on the second Thursday of November, the world observes World Usability Day. The date is also mentioned on the UN calendar. World Usability Day, which will fall on November 10 this year, is also known as ‘Make Things Easier’ day.  “Usability” is a quality that evaluates how efficiently and effectively a person can use a product, as well as how satisfied he or she is with the process.  The theme of World Usability Day 2022 is “Our Health”. The theme for this year is to evaluate systems that provide healthcare in all of its various forms, such as virtual/telehealth, electronic health records, healthcare products, and all digital health-related solutions.  This theme will assist us in exploring timely and critical issues such as continuity of care, access to treatment, telemedicine, mental health systems, exercise, nutrition, and many others.

Father of modern election science, Sir David Butler, passes away at 98

Sir David Butler, dubbed the “father of election science”, has died at the age of 98. He was born on the 17th of October 1924, Butler became a diligent student of philosophy, politics, and economics at New College, Oxford. His studies were disrupted when he was commissioned as a lieutenant to serve in the Second World War.  Butler developed upon a long­forgotten Edwardian equation called “the cube rule” for his research on elections as an undergraduate. He discovered that he was able to estimate the total number of seats won from the polling numbers, enabling him to forecast the seats likely to be won by any party based on opinion polls.   11112022
