PM Modi to visit Indonesia from November
14-16 to attend G-20 summit
PM
Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia's Bali from November 14 to 16 to attend
the two-day G20 summit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on
Thursday. India will assume the presidency of the grouping from the current
chair Indonesia on December 1. Notably, India also recently unveiled the logo,
theme and website for its presidency.
NPS money belongs to employees, can't go
back to state govts: FM Sitharaman
Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said the money in the National Pension
Scheme (NPS) belongs to contributing workers and according to the law, state
governments cannot get it back. This came after Congress-ruled states have
sought money from Centre for reintroducing old pension scheme (OPS). "Can
we change the law? It's workers' money in the central kitty," Sitharaman
added.
Dalit converts to Christianity, Islam can't
get Schedule Caste status: Centre to SC
Centre
on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that Scheduled Caste (SC) status hasn't
been granted to Dalits who converted to Islam or Christianity because
untouchability isn't prevalent in these two religions. The constitutional right
to reservations in jobs and education as a member of the SC community is
currently extended to people from Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist faiths.
Centre approves ₹13,000-crore advance for PM
Awas Yojna
The
Union Finance Ministry has approved ₹13,000-crore in advance payment for the
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna-Gramin (PMAY-G). The decision was made after the
Union Ministry of Rural Development had flagged shortage of funds to implement
the rural housing scheme. The ₹13,000-crore advance is over and above the
₹20,000-crore already provided for the scheme in the 2022-23 Budget.

layoffs in 2022?
Meta,
which fired over 11,000 employees, is the latest among major tech companies to
announce layoffs this year. Earlier, Twitter's new owner Elon Musk fired about
3,700 employees, and in October, Microsoft reportedly cut nearly 1,000 jobs.
Salesforce cut hundreds of jobs, Lyft cut 700 jobs, Stripe fired 1,100
employees, Netflix fired 450 employees, and Snap laid off 1,000 employees.
Russian assets worth over £18 billion have
been frozen: Britain
The
British government on Thursday said it has frozen assets worth over £18 billion
of Russian oligarchs and businesses over the Ukrainian invasion by Moscow. Now,
Russia has become Britain's most-sanctioned nation, overtaking Libya and Iran,
the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation said in an annual report. The
UK has also sanctioned 95% of all Russian exports.
23-year-old Indian-American Nabeela Syed
makes history in US midterm elections
A
23-year-old Indian-American woman has scripted history in the US midterm
elections. Nabeela Syed has become the youngest member to get elected to the
Illinois General Assembly. She defeated her Republican opponent Chris Bos. Born
in Palatine, Illinois, Syed graduated from the University of California with a
degree in Political Science and Business.
US Prez Biden, China's Xi set for in-person
meet in Indonesia
US
President Joe Biden will have a face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi
Jinping on Monday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Indonesia, the White
House announced. This is set to be the first in-person meeting between Biden
and Xi since Biden became president. The White House said discussions will
focus on trade, Taiwan and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Aruna Miller, 1st ever Indian-American to hold office in Maryland
Indian-American woman Aruna Miller has became the first immigrant to hold the
office of Lieutenant Governor in Maryland, Mid-Atlantic region of the United
States. She stated that residents of Maryland chose Wes Moore as their Governor
while she secured victory in the race to become Lieutenant Governor. Ms Miller, who is a former executive director
of Indian American Impact, was endorsed by the organization, which supports
Indian-American representation at every level of government. She also had the
support and endorsement by important Indian-American organizations and people.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has launched logo of Purple Fest at a function
held in Manohar Parrikar Memorial Hall of Sanjay Centre for Education,
Porvorim. The event was organised by the Office of State Commission for Persons
with Disabilities Goa in collaboration with Directorate of Social Welfare and
Entertainment Society of Goa. Goa
Government is delighted to introduce Purple Fest – Celebrating Diversity, a
first-of-its-kind inclusive festival that embraces, expresses and celebrates
persons with disabilities. Government will provide 100 per cent facilities to
the Divyangs in the State. Purple fest will be different type of festival for
which entire country is anxiously waiting for fest to happen. The government will start sign language
course in next year for the special people, which he assured to public. The aim
of the three-day inclusive festival is to illustrate how people can unite to
support each other and "make everyone in our society feel included.

Central Bank Digital Currency Could End RBI-ESMA Row
The deadlock between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the European
Securities and Market Authority (ESMA) over the inspection of Indian financing
clearing houses may be broken by a new-age product - the central bank digital
currency(CBDC). European lenders such as
HSBC, Deutsche, Standard Chartered, Barclays and make up anything between 15%
and 25% of the trades in the so-called negotiated dealing system order matching
segment (NDS-OM) run by the Clearing Corporation of India Ltd (CCIL), which is
one of the central counterparties for settlement of trades.

India Will Become Third-Largest Economy By 2027: Morgan Stanley
India is on track to become the world’s third largest economy by 2027,
surpassing Japan and Germany, and have the third largest stock market by 2030,
thanks to global trends and key investments the country has made in technology
and energy, says Morgan Stanley. All told,
India’s GDP could more than double from $3.5 trillion today to surpass $7.5
trillion by 2031. Its share of global exports could also double over that
period, while the Bombay Stock Exchange could deliver 11% annual growth,
reaching a market capitalization of $10 trillion in the coming decade.

Prominent Indian physician Dr Subhash Babu to be awarded Bailey K.
Ashford Medal
Prominent Indian physician and scientist, Dr. Subhash Babu has received the
prestigious Bailey K. Ashford Medal for 2022 and the Fellow of the American
Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (FASTMH) award 2022. This award is
given to him for his outstanding research and contributions to tropical
medicine. The medal is presented
annually to one or more mid-career researchers for distinguished work in
tropical medicine by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
(ASTMH), the largest scientific organization in tropical medicine in the world.
In its 82-year history, the award has never been given to an Indian scientist
or an Indian institution for work.
YKC Wadiyar received International Kannadiga Rathna award 2022
Member of the erstwhile royal family, Yaduveer Krishnaraja Chamaraja (YKC)
Wadiyar has been selected for the International Kannada Rathna award. It is
presented annually by Dubai Kannadigas to mark Kannada Rajyothsava. The award will be presented to YKC Wadiyar
during Vishwa Kannada Habba on November 19 at Sheikh Rashid Auditorium in
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in association with Kannadigaru Dubai Sangha as
part of celebration of the 67th Kannada Rajyothsava. Besides, Vishwamanya Award
would be presented to achievers in various fields.
Arfa Khanum Sherwani to Receive Kuldip Nayar Patrakarita Samman Award for
2022
The Gandhi Peace Foundation has announced the award of its prestigious Kuldip
Nayar Patrakarita Samman for 2022 to The Wire’s senior editor Arfa Khanum
Sherwani. The announcement was made at a press conference held at New Delhi’s
Press Club of India by the well-known academic and author, Ashis Nandy. Nandy
also announced that the awardee for 2021 was the independent journalist and
YouTuber, Ajit Anjum. The award honours
the legacy of journalist, author and human rights activist Kuldip Nayar and is
awarded to journalists working in Indian languages contributing to democratic
values and independent media. The awards will be formally conferred at a public
function later in the year. Under this award received by the Gandhi Peace
Foundation, a cash amount of one lakh rupees is given to the selected
journalists. Apart from this, he is also honored with a citation.

3 Indian women feature in 2022 Asia's Power Businesswomen List
Forbes Asia has unveiled its annual ‘Asia’s Power Businesswomen’ list which
features 20 women from the Asia-Pacific region. The list of women bosses
features three Indians as well. The
first Indian women named on the list is Ghazal Alagh, co-founder and chief
innovation officer of Honasa Consumer, Mamaearth’s parent firm. Second Indian businesswoman on the list is
Soma Mondal, chairperson of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), the first to
chair the state-run company. Forbes said that since Mondal becoming SAIL
chairperson in 2021, its annual revenue has grown by 50 per cent for the year
ended March 31, 2022. Namita Thapar,
executive director at India business of Emcure Pharma, is the third Indian to
be named of Forbes Asia’s Power Businesswomen 2022 list.
QS Asia University Rankings 2023: IIT Bombay top educational institution
in Southern Asia
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is the best educational education
in Southern Asia while IIT Delhi ranks second in the region, according to the
QS Asia University Rankings 2023. The
15th edition of the QS World University Rankings: Asia features 757
institutions – up from 687 last year and making it the biggest rankings for the
region yet. China's Peking University
ranked number 1 this year and was in second place in QS Asia 2022 rankings.
State of Food and Agriculture Report 2022 Published by FAO
The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) is one of the annual flagship report
released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It provides
comprehensive insights into the various issues related to the field of food and
agriculture based on science-based assessment.
The report assessed various drivers of agricultural automation,
including the recently developed digital technologies. Based on 27 case studies, the report analyzed
the business case for the adoption of these digital automation technologies
across various agricultural production systems in the world.
UNESCO: World Heritage Glaciers to Disappear By 2050
Glaciers at many UNESCO World Heritage sites including Yellowstone and
Kilimanjaro National Park will likely vanish by 2050, the UN agency warned,
urging leaders to act fast to save the rest. The warning followed a study of
18,600 glaciers at 50 World Heritage sites.
The UNESCO study, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation
of Nature (IUCN), shows that these glaciers have been retreating at an
accelerated rate since 2000 due to CO2 emissions, which are warming
temperatures. They are currently losing
58 billion tons of ice every year – equivalent to the combined annual water use
of France and Spain – and are responsible for nearly five per cent of observed
global sea-level rise. The glaciers under threat are in Africa, Asia, Europe,
Latin America, North America and Oceania.

Calling for integration of mangroves conservation with the
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD+) programmes for carbon sequestering, India joined the Mangrove Alliance
for Climate (MAC). The Mangrove Alliance
for Climate (MAC) is an intergovernmental alliance that seeks to expand and
hasten the progress towards the conservation and restoration of mangrove
ecosystems. Its members include the UAE, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia,
Japan, and Spain. The alliance will raise
global awareness about the role of mangroves as a nature-based climate change
solution. It will ensure the rehabilitation of mangrove forests at the global
level.

Skyroot’s first rocket set for launch from Sriharikota
India’s first privately developed rocket, Vikram-S by Hyderabad-based Skyroot
Aerospace is poised to create history as it undergoes final launch preparations
at the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)’s launchpad in Sriharikota for
launch between November 12-16. The
mission ‘Prarambh’, meaning ‘the beginning’, since it is the first mission for
Skyroot, was unveiled by ISRO chairman S. Somanath in Bengaluru after the
technical launch clearance from the Space regulator IN-SPACe.

Uttar Pradesh to host 2023 Khelo India University Games
Uttar Pradesh government to host Khelo India National University Games in
2023-2024 in four cities. Khelo India National University Games will be
conducted in four cities of Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow, Gorakhpur,
Varanasi, and Noida. In the Khelo India
National University Games, 4,500 athletes will participate representing 150
universities across the country. There
will be 20 disciplines including basketball, judo, kabaddi, wrestling,
swimming, boxing, rowing, etc. Uttar
Pradesh has got the opportunity to host the National University Games for the
first time after Odisha and Karnataka.
