BUINESS, BANKING AND ECONOMY
Retail
inflation was 7.28% in first quarter, while RBI expects it to touch 7.1%
Cooling food
prices may have helped moderate retail inflation to a five-month low of 6.7% in
July, but there could be a reversal in August’s inflation print thanks to
concerns about the uneven progression of monsoon through the country and other
factors.
Price rise in
food items had dropped to the lowest level since March 2022 at 6.75% in July,
from 7.75% in June, and was seen as the key driver for bringing consumer price
inflation below 7% after a three-month spell. In recent weeks, the government
has imposed curbs on external as well as internal trade of food items like
rice, atta (wheat flour), and tur dal (red gram), reflecting its
recognition of their surging prices.

Rice exports may fall by
4-5 MT post ban on broken rice, 20% duty
India’s rice
exports could fall by 4-5 million tonnes (MT) this fiscal year due to the ban
on broken rice as well as export duty on non-basmati rice, except for parboiled
grains, exporters said.
India, which
commands 40% share in the global rice trade, exported 21.23 MT of rice in
2021-22 fiscal as against 17.78 MT in the previous year. Before the COVID-19
pandemic, the exports were at 9.51 MT in the 2019-20 fiscal.
During
April-August period of the current financial year, government data, showed that
the country had already exported 9.35 MT as against 8.36 MT in the year-earlier
period.
India imposes 20% export duty on non-Basmatic
rice export
The Centre on
Thursday imposed an export duty of 20% on rice, brown rice, and semi-milled as
well as wholly milled rice except for parboiled rice to boost domestic
supplies, effective September 9.
India, the world’s second-largest rice producer after
China, commands a 40% share in the global trade.
The country
exported 21.2 million tonnes of rice in the 2021-22 fiscal year, of which 3.94
million tonnes were Basmati rice. It exported non-Basmati rice worth $6.11
billion in the same period, as per official data
The country
exported non-Basmati rice to more than 150 countries in 2021-22.
Welcoming the
export duty, former president of All India Rice Exporters Association Vijay
Setia said Indian rice was being exported at a “very low price”. The export
duty would lead to a reduction in non-Basmati rice shipments by 2-3 million
tonnes, but the realisation from the exports would remain the same because of
the 20% duty.
“It is a good
decision in view of fall in paddy acreage,” Mr. Setia said.
The
association’s current president Nathi Ram Gupta said the export of raw rice
from southern parts of the country would be impacted,
but shipments of parboiled may go up.
