Video of PM unveiling National Emblem statue atop new Parliament building released

A video of PM Narendra Modi unveiling the handcrafted bronze statue of India's National Emblem on top of the new Parliament building in Delhi has been released by the government. The 6.5-metre installation is made from high-purity bronze, officials said. India's state emblem is an adaptation from the Sarnath Lion Capital of Emperor Ashoka.

 

National Capital Region Planning Board's geo-portal "Pariman" now accessible for public

Geo-Portal for NCR known as ‘PARIMAN’ was launched on 31.08.2021 in the 40th meeting of the Board by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Chairman, NCRPB and Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs.

For the purpose of effective utilization of remote sensing and GIS technology, a web geo-portal has been developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC), initially for use by the National Capital Region (NCR) participating states and the office of the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB)

 Internet exchanges launched in Durgapur and Bardhaman by the National Internet Exchange of India

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India, inaugurated two new Internet Exchange Points (IXP) of the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) at Durgapur and Vardhman.

In the presence of S. S. Ahluwalia, Member of Parliament for Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha, in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision to connect every Indian. It is under the 1000-day plan of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

. Union Minister Jitendra Singh to launch the IS4OM for Safe & Sustainable Space Environment

With the help of the ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operation and Management (IS4OM), India has increased its ability to protect its space assets on its own.

Mr. S Somanath, Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, are slated to officially launch the IS4OM in the presence of Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of Science and Technology, Earth Sciences.

The IS40M system was developed with a comprehensive viewpoint, according to ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), to assure the safety and sustainability of the space environment while enjoying the benefits of sustainable use of space for national development.

 Sri Lanka PM Ranil Wickremesinghe announces resignation

 

Ranil Wickremesinghe has resigned as Sri Lankan prime minister to make way for an all-party government to take over. He will resign after an all-party government is established and the majority is secured in Parliament.

Wickremesinghe will continue as Prime Minister until then. Meanwhile, 16 MPs of President Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party in a letter requested him to resign immediately and make way for a leader who could command the majority in Parliament to lead the country.


Putin signs decree giving all Ukrainians path to Russian citizenship

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday issued a decree to fast-track citizenship for all Ukrainians "in a simplified manner" amid the ongoing conflict. Putin had already fast-tracked the Russian citizenship process in Ukraine's Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, which are partially under Russian control. Several parts of Donbas, which include Luhansk and Donetsk, are also under Russian control.


Shinzo Abe's party wins majority in polls held after his assassination

Ex-Japanese PM Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which is also Japan's ruling party, has bagged a majority in the parliamentary polls held two days after his assassination. LDP-Komeito coalition has secured 76 seats in the upper house of the parliament. Abe was campaigning for an LDP candidate in Nara city when he was shot dead on July 8.


Sri Lanka will elect new Prez on July 20 as Gotabaya to step down

Sri Lankan parliament will elect a new president on July 20 to succeed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana announced on Monday. The decision, which was taken at an all-party meet earlier today, comes as Rajapaksa will formally resign from the post on July 13. Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe's office also confirmed that the entire Cabinet will resign.
Will not endorse anyone running to replace me as PM: Boris Johnson

 

Britain's caretaker PM Boris Johnson on Monday said that he will not endorse any contender in the race to replace him as the PM as that would damage their chances of winning. He added, "Whoever takes over from me, there is a great agenda to be continued...my job is to continue with the programme on which we were elected."

 Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh elected YSRC president for life

Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress (YSRC) elected Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, as its "president for life."

Following a change to the party's constitution, the following decision was made following the two-day plenary of the YSRC.

Jagan Mohan Reddy would be given lifetime leadership of the YSRCP, according to Vijayasai Reddy, the leader of the YSRC's Parliamentary Party.

 Indian Air Force & PNB signs MoU for ‘PNB Rakshak Plus Scheme’

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a PSU under the Ministry of Defence.

Upadhyay has been appointed to the post for a period of five years from the date of his assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

. Rajendra Prasad takes charge as MD of National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited

Rajendra Prasad has been appointed as the Managing Director of National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) after the government dismissed Satish Agnihotri over corruption allegations.

He is working as Director of Project with NHSRCL since November 2017 and is overall in charge of civil engineering works of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, popularly known as the Bullet Train Project.

Alvaro Lario named as new President of IFAD

The governing council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has been appointed as Spain’s Alvaro Lario new President.

Lario will take office on 1 October 2022 and serve a four-year term. He will succeed Gilbert Houngbo who has led the organisation since 2017.

. Coffee Board to collaborate with ISRO to develop climate-resistant varieties

 

State-run Coffee Board is planning to focus on developing new varieties that will be resistant to the changing climatic patterns.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Coffee Board and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was signed with regard to breeding climate-resilient varieties and assessing the carbon sequestration potential in coffee among others.

The Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI) in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka conducts plant-related research activities under the Board in the areas of plant breeding, agronomy, agriculture chemistry and soil science, plant physiology, pathology, entomology, and post-harvest technology, among others.

 Shriram General Insurance and City Union Bank signed a corporate agency agreement

 

City Union Bank (CUB) and Shriram General Insurance inked an agreement in a corporate setup to offer Shriram General Insurance’s insurance products through its network of 727 offices throughout India.

According to this arrangement, Shriram General Insurance will provide customers of the bank with personal lines of insurance products including auto, personal injury, house, and travel insurance as well as business lines of insurance goods like property, marine, and engineering insurance.

RBI unveils new system to settle international trade payments in Indian rupee

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday unveiled a system for international trade settlements in the Indian rupee. The new system will be put in place to "promote the growth of global trade" and "support the increasing interest of the global trading community in INR", RBI said. The system allows for invoicing, payment and settlement of exports/imports in INR.


IOC, BPCL, HPCL may post combined ₹10,700 cr loss in Q1: Report

Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum may post a combined loss of ₹10,700 crore in June quarter, ICICI Securities said in a report. The three state-owned oil marketing companies are losing ₹12-14 per litre on petrol and diesel, the report said. "We estimate gross refining margins to remain fairly strong at $17-18 per barrel levels," the brokerage added.


Bank privatisation bill could be introduced in Monsoon Session: Report

The government could introduce a bill for privatisation of select-public sector banks in the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Parliament, CNBC TV18 reported. The government is awaiting the views of the Law Ministry on the proposed bill, the report said. The government may lower the minimum stake in public sector banks from 51% at present to 26%, the report added.

. Federal Bank and Bank of India penalized by RBI for breaking regulatory obligations

Due to shortcomings in regulatory compliance, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) fined Federal Bank Rs 5.72 crore. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) (financial services provided by banks) Directions, 2016 has strict penalties for violations.

Federal Bank did not make sure that the insurance company did not compensate any of its employees providing corporate agency or insurance broking services with incentives (cash or non-monetary). The private lender's standalone net profit increased by 13.13% to Rs 540.54 crore in Q4 FY22 over Q4 FY21 on a 2.72 % increase in total income to Rs 3948.24 crore.


RBI fines three cooperative banks for non-compliance

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has fined three co-operative banks for non-compliance with certain guidelines. Nasik Merchant's Co-operative Bank was fined ₹50 lakh as it continued to accept fresh deposits in existing accounts of other non-scheduled urban co-operative banks. Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank was fined ₹37.5 lakh and The National Central Cooperative Bank in Bihar ₹2 lakh.

 

 Union Bank launched Open Banking Sandbox and Metaverse Virtual Lounge

Union Bank of India (UBI) has introduced a Metaverse Virtual Lounge - Uni-verse, & Open Banking Sandbox environment in collaboration with Tech Mahindra in an effort to elevate consumers' banking experiences.

In the beginning, movies and information on the bank's deposits, loans, government assistance programmes, digital initiatives, etc. will be hosted by Uni-verse. Customers will receive a special banking experience thanks to it.

The bank will work with fintechs and start-ups to develop cutting-edge banking products under the Open Banking Sandbox environment, according to reports.

Nokia has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science to set up the Nokia Center of Excellence in networked robotics at IISc Bengaluru.

The Center of Excellence (CoE) will promote inter-disciplinary research involving robotics and advanced communication technologies in 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It will also develop use cases across industrial automation, agriculture and disaster management.

. IIT-M technology to play 'Pivot'al role in providing patients with cancer with individualised care

IIT Madras researchers have developed a revolutionary method that can identify a person's cancer-causing genes. Based on patient DNA profiles, the "Pivot," an AI-based tool, will help clinicians create individualised treatment programmes for patients.

The tool is built on a machine learning model that classifies genes into cancer-preventing tumour suppressors, oncogenes that cause cancer, and neutral genes.

I don't take any win for granted: Djokovic after winning 7th Wimbledon title

Following his seventh Wimbledon title after defeating world number 45 Nick Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(7-3), world number seven Novak Djokovic said he does not take any win for granted and "particularly not at Wimbledon." He added, "On the contrary, actually, every time feels a bit different, special in its own way." Notably, it was Djokovic's 21st Grand Slam title.

 'Father of Indian Internet' BK Syngal passes away

Brijendra K Syngal, former Chairman of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 82. Syngal, who has been acknowledged as the father of the Indian Internet, was known for his strong views and fearlessness in taking on the establishment.

As the Chairman of VSNL, he was unofficially known as the ‘bulldozer’ for his ability to push through bureaucratic hurdles, as a result of which VSNL grew from a $125 million company in 1991 into a $1.65 billion communications giant by 1998.
