Cabinet approves development of Greenfield
Airport in Guj's Dholera
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the development of
Phase I of Greenfield Airport in Gujarat's Dholera. Union Minister Anurag
Thakur said that 1,501 hectares of land have been allocated for the airport
which'll be built within 48 months. It's expected to handle 2,73,000 tonne
cargo and cater to 23 lakh passengers in the next 20 years, he added.
College of Engineering Pune tops AICTE's
learning assessment survey
College of Engineering Pune has been ranked first in All India Council
for Technical Education's (AICTE) learning assessment survey, with 314
undergraduates scoring over 70% in the test. Jharkhand's Birsa Institute of
Technology and Karnataka's NMAM Institute of Technology ranked second and
third. The three colleges don't fall in National Institute Ranking Framework's
list of top 50 colleges.
Bengal Assembly passes bill to remove Guv as
Visitor of pvt universities
The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to replace Governor
Jagdeep Dhankhar with the state Education Minister Bratya Basu as the Visitor
of private universities. This comes after the Assembly passed a bill seeking to
replace Dhankhar with CM Mamata Banerjee as the state-run universities'
Chancellor. Both the bills need to get consent from Dhankhar before becoming
acts.
India's
first centralised AC railway terminal in Bengaluru becomes operational
The ultra luxury Sir M Visvesvaraya Railway Terminal in Karnataka's capital
city Bengaluru was made operational. The Ernakulam Tri-Weekly Express chugged
trough the station to mark this special occasion. According to the railway officials, the
air-conditioned SMV Railway Terminal is a Rs 314 crore project. It has solar
rooftop panels and rainwater harvesting mechanism. The railway terminal at the city's
Baiyappanahalli area, named after Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, is equipped
with state-of-the-art facilities and claims to have an airport-like aura.
PM Modi launches special stamp to mark 200th
anniversary of Mumbai Samachar
PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday released a special postal stamp
commemorating the 200 years of the Mumbai Samachar newspaper. While addressing
a gathering, PM Modi said, "Under the influence of foreigners, when this
city became Bombay, even then this newspaper didn't leave its local
connect." He added that regional newspapers played an important role in
the Independence struggle.
Mobile phones will be confiscated if found
in schools: TN Minister
Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Tuesday
warned students against carrying mobile phones to classes and said that they
would be confiscated if found in schools. "The young minds should be
refreshed through education curriculum," he said. The minister's message
comes a day after the schools for classes 1 to 10 re-opened on Monday.
Maharashtra govt makes rural stint mandatory
for MBBS students
The Maharashtra government has announced that, starting academic year
2022-2023, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) graduates will
have to compulsorily complete their one-year rural stint after completing their
course. An official circular further states that without completing the rural stint,
students will not be considered eligible to apply for postgraduate entrance
tests.
Karnataka govt launched ‘FRUITS’ software for farmer schemes
The Karnataka government has launched ‘The Farmer Registration & Unified
Beneficiary Information System’ or FRUITS software for Aadhar-based,
single-window registration for the schemes.
FRUITS software will facilitate single registration using an Aadhar card
and Karnataka’s Bhoomi digitized land record system for authenticating
ownership. Through the creation of
single digital identification through FRUITS, farmers can access benefits of
hosts of schemes such as Direct Benefit Transfer under PM Kisan, payment for
Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for crops, special financial assistance, caste
certificate authentication, and ration cards.

50-yr-long ownership dispute
Canada and Denmark have decided to divide a small, uninhabited island in
the Arctic called the 'Hans Island', ending a 50-year-long ownership dispute
between the countries. The island, with an area of 1.2 square kilometres, is
equidistant from both Canada's Ellesmere Island and Denmark's Greenland. Both
countries had laid claim to the island since 1971.
Tesla India policy executive quits after
company puts India plan on hold: Report
Tesla's Policy and Business Development executive for India and new
markets in South East Asia, Manuj Khurana, has resigned weeks after the
carmaker put on hold its plans to sell electric cars in the country, Reuters
reported. Khurana was appointed to the role in March 2021 and was lobbying the
Indian government to slash the import tax on electric cars.

Administrator at Srei finds over ₹3,000 cr
in fraudulent transactions
The RBI-appointed administrator at Srei Equipment Finance Ltd has found
fraudulent transactions worth over ₹3,000 crore conducted over FY20 and FY21.
Loans involved with these transactions were at ₹2,512 crore, while the notional
loss to the company stood at ₹513.67 crore, the company's filing said. The
administrator has filed an application with the National Company Law Tribunal
in this regard.
Foxconn's Bharat FIH gets SEBI's nod to
raise ₹5,000 crore via IPO
Bharat FIH, the Indian arm of iPhone maker Foxconn, has received market
regulator SEBI's approval for raising ₹5,000 crore through an IPO. The public
issue comprises fresh issue of shares worth ₹2,502 crore and an offer-for-sale
of up to ₹2,502 crore. Bharat FIH has reserved 75% shares for qualified
institutional buyers and 15% shares for non-institutional investors
Retail inflation for May matches estimates at 7.04%
According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme
Implementation, India's headline retail inflation rate eased to 7.04 percent in
May from April's near-eight-year high of 7.79 percent thanks to a favourable
base effect. The fall in inflation in
May is unlikely to do much to slow down the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) rate
hike cycle. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation was 7.79 per cent in
April. In May 2021, the retail inflation stood at 6.3 per cent.
OmniCard becomes 1st RBI licensed PPI to launch cash withdrawal across
all ATMs PAN India
Payment solution provider, OmniCard has announced that it became the 1st RBI licensed
PPI (prepaid payment instrument) to launch cash withdrawal using a
RuPay-powered card from any ATMs across the country. The move came in after RBI permitted the
non-bank licensed entities to enable cash withdrawals from the digital wallets. OmniCard users can withdraw cash from any ATM
at their convenience with full security from frauds like card theft, card
cloning, and PIN skimming as the withdrawal facility comes with high safety
& secure features and protects the user from exposing their money and bank
account details. The company worked with
the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) team to enable the facility.

38th India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol Conducted in Andaman Sea
The 38th India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) between the
Indian Navy Units of Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) and Indonesian Navy is
being conducted from June 13 to 24 2022 in the Andaman Sea and Straits of
Malacca. The 38th CORPAT is the first
post pandemic Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) between the two countries. It includes a visit by the Indonesian Navy
units to ANC at Port Blair from June 13 to 15, 2022 followed by a Sea Phase in
the Andaman Sea and visit by IN Units to Sabang (Indonesia) from June 23 to 24,
2022.

Haryana won Khelo India Youth Games 2021 title
Hosts Haryana won the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2021 title with 52 gold
medals on the final day. Haryana also
won 39 silver and 46 bronze medals, taking their overall medal tally to 137
medals - the highest cumulative haul by any state. The late surge helped
Haryana leapfrog the 2020 champions Maharashtra on the KIYG medals table. Maharashtra, meanwhile, managed 45 gold, 40
silver and 40 bronze medals to come second with 125 medals. Karnataka, with 22 gold, 17 silver and 28
bronze, finished third with 67 medals.

against South Africa, stay alive in the series
India defeated South Africa by 48 runs in the third T20I in
Visakhapatnam to stay alive in the five-match series after having lost the
first two T20Is. The victory is India's biggest (by runs) against South Africa
in T20Is. India's previous biggest T20I victory against South Africa had come
on September 20, 2007, when they won by 37 runs.

Neeraj Chopra breaks his own national record
India's Olympic gold medal-winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on
Tuesday broke his own national record at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland. The
24-year-old bagged silver medal in the event with a best throw of 89.30 metres.
He had set the previous national record with an 88.07-metre throw in March
2021.

National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is celebrating
Elimination of Child Labour Week in the honour of World Day Against Child
Labour. It is being celebrated in 75
places as part of the “75th anniversary celebrations of India’s independence –
“Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” in different districts starting from 12th June to
20th June, 2022 as a significance to pay attention to the problem of child
labour and to find ways to eradicate it.

Long distance running legend Hari Chand passes away
Long distance great Hari Chand, a two-time Olympian and a double Asian Games
gold medallist, passed away in Jalandhar. He was 69. Chand won the 5000 and 10,000m gold at the
1978 Bangkok Asiad and also the 10,000m title at the 1975 Asian Championships
in Seoul. Chand, who hailed from
Ghorewaha village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur District, made waves with his barefoot
running and broke the 10,000m National record at the 1976 Montreal Olympics
which stood for 32 years before falling to Surendra Singh.
