PM to visit Assam to lay foundation stone
for projects on April 28
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on April 28 to lay the
foundation stone for several projects including Veterinary College (Diphu),
Degree College (West Karbi Anglong) and Agricultural College (Kolonga, West
Karbi Anglong). The PM will also address a rally at Diphu in Karbi Anglong
district, as per the Prime Minister's office.
After PMs meet on COVID-19, curbs to resume
at airports: K'taka CM
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that precautionary
measures at airports may be reintroduced after the Prime Minister’s meeting on
COVID-19. "Depending on advisory from the Centre following the PM’s
meeting with CMs tomorrow, all precautionary measures will resume at airports
and border districts, especially those bordering Maharashtra and Kerala,"
Bommai stated.
NITI Aayog released draft battery swapping policy
NITI Aayog has released a draft battery swapping policy, under which all
metropolitan cities with a population above 40 lakh will be prioritized for the
development of a battery swapping network under the first phase. All major cities such as state capitals, UT
headquarters, and cities with populations above 5 lakh will be covered under
the second phase. Importance has been
given to the two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicle segments in growing cities.
According to the draft policy, vehicles with swappable batteries will be sold
without a battery, providing the benefit of lower purchase costs to potential
EV owners.
Khongjom Day was observed in Manipur at the Khongjom War Memorial
Complex
Rich tributes were paid in Manipur to the valiant sons of the state who made
tremendous sacrifices fighting against the British in the battle of Khongjom
during the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War to maintain Manipur's independence. Governor La Ganesan and Chief Minister N.
Biren Singh, as well as the general public, attended the state-level Khongjom
Day ceremony at Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Khebaching, Thoubal district. Every year on the 23rd of April, Manipur
commemorates Manipuri warriors who battled against the British, especially
Major Paona Brajabashi. The Governor and
Chief Minister of Manipur joined the people of Manipur in a floral homage to
the heroes. At Khebaching, two minutes of silence were held, as well as a gun
salute. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh,
speaking at the event, stated that the younger generation must remember our
forebears' sacrifices and always fight for a united nation. Chief Minister also thanked the Centre for
renaming Mount Harriet in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as Mount Manipur.
He explained that the decision was made in honour of Manipur fighters'
sacrifice.
Karnataka govt launched Social Awareness Campaign "SAANS"
Health and Medical Education Minister of Karnataka, Keshava Reddy Sudhakar has
launched the ‘Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully’
(SAANS) Campaign. SAANS is a campaign
that has been launched to ensure early detection and greater awareness of
pneumonia in children under the age of five. As per SRS 2018, Karnataka’s
under-five mortality is at 28 per 1000 live births. Pneumonia is a lung infection that is caused
due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infection. By 2025, the state’s goal is to
reduce the under-five mortality to 23 per 1,000 live. Also, to achieve the
National Health Policy goals, pneumonia mortality has to be reduced to less
than 3 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Centre cancels foreign funding licences of
NGOs CHRI, AAWW
The Union Home Ministry has cancelled the Foreign Contribution Regulation
Act (FCRA) licences of two NGOs, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI)
and Apne Aap Women Worldwide (AAWW). The action was taken over violation of the
law and diverting of funds received from abroad, officials said on Tuesday.
Notably, the FCRA licence is needed to receive funds from abroad.
Prasar Bharati signed MoU with Public Broadcaster of Argentina
Prasar Bharati has signed an MoU with the Public Broadcaster of Argentina Radio
Television Argentina (RTA) for collaboration in the field of broadcasting. The MoU encompasses a range of fronts in
Media and Broadcasting that is set to exemplify the communication and
transmission networking of both nations.
India and Argentina share cordial relations and developmental
partnerships in the areas of political, economic, scientific and technological
cooperation. The Chief Executive Officer
of Prasar Bharati, Shashi Shekhar Vempati and the president of RTA, Rosario
Lufrano, signed the agreement in the presence of the Indian Ambassador to
Argentina Dinesh Bhatia. The MoU will
allow expanding cooperation between both media systems, with the exchange of
programs, formats and cultural initiatives and share knowledge and experiences
in the fields of culture, education, science, entertainment, sports and news. It also opens the doors for cooperation in
areas of mutual interest, such as audiovisual platforms, documentaries,
animation, comedies, series, installations and incentives for TV production,
among others. It also has the possibility of developing personnel exchange for
training.

20 lakh children risk starving to death in
Horn of Africa: UN
Nearly 20 lakh children risk starving to death in the Horn of Africa
amid severe droughts, according to UN aid chief Martin Griffiths. Parts of
Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia are facing the driest conditions in more than 40
years. The UN has only a fraction of the $1.4 billion it needs to respond to
the crisis, Griffiths said.

Russian court orders seizure of Google's
assets worth $7 mn: Report
A Russian court has ordered the seizure of 500 million roubles ($6.67
million) worth of Google's property and funds in Russia in connection with
Google's restrictions on a Russian firm's YouTube channel, Reuters reported
citing news agencies. The case concerns GPM Entertainment Television. News
agency RIA reported that the court had rejected a previous claim by GPM on
April 13.
World Bank agreed to provide $600 mn in
financial aid: Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan President's media division in a statement on Tuesday
said, "The World Bank has agreed to provide $600 million in financial
assistance to address the current economic crisis." The World Bank would
release $400 million shortly, it added. The crisis has led to a shortage of
essential items in the country.

SEBI issues ₹2.05-cr recovery notice to
ex-NSE official Subramanian
SEBI on Tuesday sent a notice to NSE's ex-Group Operating Officer Anand
Subramanian, asking him to pay ₹2.05 crore in a case pertaining to governance
lapses at NSE. This comes after Subramanian had earlier failed to pay a
₹2-crore fine to SEBI. In the event of non-payment of the latest fine, SEBI may
recover the amount by selling Subramanian's assets.
LIC IPO price band likely fixed at ₹902-₹949
per share: Reports
Life Insurance Corporation's (LIC) IPO price band has likely been fixed
at ₹902-₹949 per share, reports said on Tuesday. There will be a ₹60 discount
for policyholders, the reports added. Previous reports said the LIC IPO will
likely open on May 4 and close on May 9, with the government looking to raise
₹21,000 crore by diluting a 3.5% stake.
Bajaj Finance reports highest-ever net
profit of ₹2,420 cr in Q4
Bajaj Finance reported its highest-ever consolidated profit after tax
(PAT) of ₹2,419.51 crore in the January-March 2022 quarter, up 79.67% YoY from
₹1,346.64 crore. The company's net interest income for the quarter rose 30% YoY
to ₹6,068 crore against ₹4,659 crore. Its assets under management grew 29% YoY
to ₹1.97 lakh crore while new loans grew 15% to 6.28 million.
Elon Musk to acquire Twitter in $44 Billion 2022
Elon Musk, the world's richest man, agreed to acquire Twitter for $44 billion,
ending a drama that included hostile takeover threats before handing him
personal control of one of the world's most powerful social media networks. According to Twitter, the publicly traded
corporation will now become a private entity owned by Musk, who negotiated a
$54.20 per-share purchase price. Musk
secured $46.5 billion in funding last week to complete the deal, and Dan Ives,
an analyst at Wedbush Securities, predicted earlier in the day that the board
would likely approve his offer because no other buyer could be found. Twitter stock was trading 5.9% higher on Wall
Street. Musk, who has blasted Twitter's
overzealous moderation, bought a 9% interest in the firm in April and then
offered to buy the entire company altogether, citing a goal to preserve free
speech.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gets John F. Kennedy Award
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, for the first time ever, awarded the
John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award 2022 to five individuals. The award
will be presented by Caroline Kennedy and her son, Jack Schlossberg on May 22,
2022, at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Boston, USA. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President
is named for his valour to protect the Ukrainian people during the
Russia-Ukraine Conflict.

Russia removed as hosts of men's 2023 Ice
Hockey World Championship
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said Russia has been
removed as hosts of the men's 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship that was to be
played in Russian President Vladimir Putin's home city St. Petersburg. The IIHF
said Russia was removed due to "concern for the safety and well-being of
all participating players, officials, media and fans".
RR defend lowest total in IPL 2022 against
RCB, jump to top of points table
RR defeated RCB by 29 runs on Tuesday to record their third victory in a
row in IPL 2022. With the victory, RR jumped to top of the points table. RR put
up a total of 144/8 and went on to dismiss RCB for 115 in 19.3 overs. RR's
144/8 is the lowest defended total in IPL 2022 so far.
F-1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2022 won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen
Formula One champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull-Netherlands) won the
Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Italy. It was Verstappen’s second win this season
after Saudi Arabia, which has also included two retirements, and the 22nd of
his career. Sergio Perez (Red
Bull-Mexico) finished second and Lando Norris (McLaren-UK) finished third.

World Intellectual Property Day 2022 observed on April 26
World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated on the 26th of April to learn
about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging
innovation and creativity. The day recognizes the huge potential of young
people to find new and better solutions that support the transition to a
sustainable future. This year, World
Intellectual Property Day 2022’s theme focuses on IP and Youth innovating for a
Better Future. It is an opportunity for young people to find out how IP rights
can support their goals, help transform their ideas into reality, generate
income, create jobs and make a positive impact on the world around them. With IP rights, young people have access to
some of the key tools they need to advance their ambitions. The event was established by the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how
patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life.” April 26th was chosen as the day to celebrate
World Intellectual Property Day as it coincides with the date when the
convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization came into
effect in 1970.
International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day 2022: 26 April
International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is observed every year on
April 26 to raise awareness of the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster
and the risks of nuclear energy in general.
The day not only informs us about the man-made disaster but also educates
human beings about the risks of nuclear energy in general. After the 30th
anniversary of the accident, on December 8, 2016, the United Nations adopted
the resolution and proclaimed April 26 as the International Chernobyl Disaster
Remembrance Day. The General Assembly in
its resolution recognised that even after three decades of the 1986 disaster,
the long-term consequences remained seriously persistent and the affected
communities and territories continued to experience the related needs.

Former President of Kenya Mwai Kibaki Passes Away
Former president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki passed away at the age of 90. He led the
country from 2002 to 2013. During his rule, more than 1,100 people died in
bloody ethnic battles after disputed 2007 polls, but to prevent such unrest he
adopted a new constitution with reforms.
His rule was ruined by uncontrolled corruption and lavish spending on
flagship projects which increased the country’s debt.
Noted Padma Shri writer Binapani Mohanty passes away
Eminent writer of Odisha and Padma Shri awardee (2020), Binapani Mohanty passed
away at the age of 85. She was born in Berhampur and started her teaching
career as a lecturer in Economy in 1960.
Her many short stories have been translated into various languages
(including Hindi, English, Kannada, Marathi). She had founded an
organisation of Odia women writers named ‘Odisha Lekhika Sansad.’ Binapani Mohanty was conferred with the Padma
Shri in 2020 for her contribution to Odia literature. She also was awarded the
Adibadi Jagannath Das Puraskar – the highest literary award by the Odisha
Sahitya Akademi, in 2019. Her collection
of short stories ‘Pata Dei’ has won the Sahitya Akademi award. She also
received Sarala Samman from the Government of Odisha.
