No 'Zero Hour' & 'Question Hour' in Parliament on Jan 31, Feb 1

Parliament's Budget session will not have 'Zero Hour' and 'Question Hour' on January 31 and February 1 due to the address of President Ram Nath Kovind and presentation of Union Budget 2022. Matters of urgent public importance are raised during the 'Zero Hour', while 'Question Hour' allows MPs to ask questions to ministers.

The team that helped Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepare the Union Budget includes Finance Secretary TV Somanathan, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj and Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth. EC bans exit polls for upcoming state polls from Feb 10-March 7

The Election Commission said that no person will be allowed to conduct or publish results of exit polls from 7:00 am of February 10 till 6:30 pm on March 7. Any person who violates the rule shall be imprisoned for upto two years or may be fined or both, EC added. The results will be declared on March 10.


Lok Sabha secretariat launches Digital Sansad app


Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has launched the official mobile application of the Parliament named ‘Digital Sansad App’ on January 27, 2022, to allow citizens to access live proceedings of the House, including the Union Budget 2022 live.  The app will make the Parliament and Parliamentary proceedings accessible not only to the members but also to the public of the country.  Through the Digital Sansad App, citizens can check what their members of Parliament are doing, what debates they are participating in and what they are saying. Using the app, parliamentarians can also digitally log their attendance.  The app contains information on budget speeches since 1947 as well as House discussions from the 12th Lok Sabha to 17th Lok Sabha. It will also contain a live telecast of Sansad proceedings. 2022 Budget session can also be watched live on this App.

France won't stay in Mali if price is too high: Defence Minister

Speaking about the French troop deployment to fight militants in Mali, France's Defence Minister Florence Parly said, "We are not prepared to pay an unlimited price to remain in Mali." Relations between Mali's military junta and its international partners are close to breaking down after it failed to organise an election following two coups, according to Reuters.

 


Russia announces ban on more European Union officials

Russia on Friday said that it had banned more European Union officials from entering Russia in response to restrictions imposed on Russian officials by the EU. However, it didn't disclose identities of banned officials or reveal the number of people banned. "This decision lacks any legal justification and transparency and will meet an appropriate response," the EU said in response.


World’s-largest canal lock unveiled in Netherlands


The world’s largest canal lock has been inaugurated at Ijmuiden, a small port city, in the Port of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The sea lock was inaugurated by Dutch King Willen-Alexander.  The Ijmuiden sea lock is 500-meter (1,640-feet) long and 70-meter wide. Construction on the massive infrastructure project began in 2016 and was meant to be done by 2019. It also went over the initially planned budget by around €300 million ($338 million).  The Ijmuiden lock was designed to allow large, modern cargo ships to reach the port of Amsterdam. The structure is also deep enough that ships will no longer have to wait for a favourable water level to enter the canal. With almost nine meters above the sea leave, the structure is also a defence against the threat of flooding.

India's exports to China jump 34% from 2019 to $22.9 billion

India's exports to China have surged about 34% to $22.9 billion in 2021 from $17.1 billion in 2019, according to Commerce Ministry data. Imports also increased by 28% to $87.5 billion last year compared to $68.4 billion in 2019, the data showed. India's trade deficit with China widened to $64.5 billion in 2021, as per the data.


NASA's JPL gets its first female Director in 85 years

Laurie Leshin, President of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), has become the first woman to be appointed as the Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in its 85-year history. She has also been named as the VP of Caltech. She is the first woman President in the university's 150-year history. Faculty and students from Caltech founded JPL in 1936.


IT hiring has never been this bullish in 15 years: Info Edge CEO

Info Edge CEO Hitesh Oberoi said, "Since our IPO 15 years ago, IT hiring has never been as bullish as it is now and it shows no signs of slowing down." "The last time we saw such growth in our Naukri business was 15 years ago," Oberoi added. Naukri India's billing rose 85% year-on-year to ₹309 crore in third quarter.

 


GoI appoints Anantha Nageshwaran as chief economic advisor


The Government of India has appointed Dr V Anantha Nageswaran as the new Chief Economic Adviser. The announcement came days ahead of the presentation of the 2022 Union Budget on February 1 and the tabling of the 2021-22 Economic Survey on January 31.  This post was lying vacant since December 17, 2021, when KV Subramanian left the office. He is a former member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC).  Dr Nageswaran, who is a noted writer, author, teacher, and economic consultant, has taught at several business schools and institutes of management across India and abroad. Before his appointment as the Chief Economic Adviser, he was the Dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a visiting professor of Economics at the Krea University in Andhra Pradesh.


Pushp Kumar Joshi named to be new chairman and MD of HPCL


Pushp Kumar Joshi has been named to be the new chairman and managing director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), the nation’s third-largest oil refining and fuel marketing company.  Joshi, who is currently Director – Human Resources at HPCL has been on the board of HPCL for almost a decade now. He will replace Mukesh Kumar Surana, who superannuates on April 30 this year.  The recommendation will now go to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister (PM) of India. ACC will decide on his selection after getting reports from anti-corruption agencies such as CVC (Central Vigilance Commission) and CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).

TerraPay tie-up with NPCI International to boost cashless transactions


TerraPay has signed MoU with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) to allow Indian customers with an active UPI ID to receive real-time, international payments into their bank accounts via TerraPay’s secure payments technology. It will enable a seamless and convenient cross-border remittances experience.  NIPL is an international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This association with NIPL will allow Indians with an active UPI ID to receive real-time, international payments into their bank accounts via TerraPay’s adaptive and secure payments technology.  The intended collaboration will now further empower UPI users to leverage TerraPay’s agile interoperable payments infrastructure to receive payments on a fully regulated, secure, scalable, and efficient channel.


Google to invest upto $1 Billion in Bharti Airtel


Bharti Airtel and Google have announced a long-term partnership agreement, to accelerate the growth of India’s digital ecosystem. Under the deal, Google will invest USD 1 billion in Airtel.  From the total investment, Google will invest USD 700 million to acquire a 1.28 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel Ltd. The remaining USD 300 million will go toward multi-year commercial agreements with Airtel, including devices built together by the two tech giants.  The USD 1 billion funding is part of Google’s USD 10 billion ‘Google for India Digitization Fund’, launched in 2020. This is Google second investment in an Indian telecom service provider (after Reliance Jio). Discussion between the two companies had been going on since the first half of 2021 and culminated in an announcement.

PM Narendra Modi Hosts First India-Central Asia Virtual Summit


Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has hosted the first India-Central Asia Summit, through the virtual platform. It was the first of its kind engagement between India and the Central Asian countries at the level of leaders.  The central Asian region has five recognized countries. The Summit was attended by the Presidents of these five Central Asian countries. These are the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan), Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan.  The first India-Central Asia Summit coincided with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Central Asian countries. During the summit, the Leaders agreed to hold the Summit every 2 years (biennial). The summit is symbolic of the importance attached by the leaders of both sides to a comprehensive and enduring India-Central Asia partnership.

WGC: Global gold demand rises 10% to 4,021 tonnes


According to the World Gold Council (WGC) report ‘Gold Demand Trends 2021’ has informed that the global gold demand rose 10 per cent in 2021 to 4,021.3 tonnes. The overall gold demand during 2020, which was impacted following Covid-19 related disruptions, stood at 3,658.8 tonnes.  The demand for the yellow metal was mainly driven by Central bank buying during the fourth quarter of 2021, recovery in jewellery consumption, mainly in India and China.  India's gold consumption surged to 797.3 tonnes in 2021, on the back of the recovery in consumer sentiments and pent-up demand post Covid-19-related disruptions and the bullish trend is set to continue this year as well.

After winning her third Grand Slam at Australian Open 2022 and becoming the first home champion at the tournament since Chris O'Neil in 1978, world number one Ashleigh Barty said, "It was a little bit surreal." Barty is the first player to win Australian Open without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2017. Overall, it's Barty's 15th singles' title.

Ravi Kumar took three wickets as India bowled Bangladesh out for 111 runs in 37.1 overs. Opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi top-scored with 44(65) as India chased down the target in 30.5 overs.

A new book titled “The $10 Trillion Dream” author by Subhash Garg


The former finance secretary of India, Subhash Chandra Garg has announced his debut book named “The $10 Trillion Dream”. The book is scheduled to hit stands towards the end of February 2022.  The new book explores the critical policy issues that India faces today and suggests reforms for it to become a USD 10 trillion economy by the mid-2030s. It is published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI).  Garg, a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) for over 36 years, has served in various key positions for both the Union government and the government of Rajasthan. He was designated finance secretary in March 2019.

India's largest energy conglomerate NTPC Ltd asked the Indian Railways to rename the Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) tests organised by the Railway Recruitment Board. The request comes amid large-scale protests over Railways' alleged certain irregularities in its screening process. "NTPC Limited has inadvertently been caught in the crossfire...it's hurting our reputation," NTPC Ltd said.


Farmers to observe 'Betrayal Day' against Centre on Jan 31: Tikait

Farmers will observe a 'Betrayal Day' across the country on January 31 (Monday), Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said, alleging that the Centre didn't fulfil promises made to the protesting farmers. Canada plans to appoint a special representative to fight Islamophobia as part of its anti-racism strategy, the Canadian government said in a statement. "Islamophobia is a concrete and daily reality for Muslim communities across Canada and around the world," the government added. The announcement was made as the country marked the fifth anniversary of the mosque attack in Québec.


Israel President visits UAE for 1st time, meets Crown Prince

Israel President Isaac Herzog arrived in United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the first time amid regional tensions and met Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During the talks, President Herzog condemned the recent drone attack on UAE claimed by Iran-backed Yemen's Houthi rebels. Herzog was also expected to meet Jewish communities in the UAE.

 


Pakistan looks to secure a $3 billion loan from China: Report

Pakistan is looking to secure a $3 billion loan from China during Pakistan PM Imran Khan's upcoming visit to China, The Express Tribune reported. The Pakistan PM will depart for Beijing on February 3 and attend the inaugural session of the Winter Olympics there. China has already placed $11 billion in Pakistan as commercial loans and foreign exchange reserves support.

 


Russia logs record over 1.2 lakh new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours

Russia reported record 1,21,228 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the Federal Response Centre said. This comes after the country reported nearly 1.1 lakh COVID-19 cases on Saturday. The government also reported 617 new deaths on Sunday taking the total death toll to over 3 lakh. Meanwhile, reports said Moscow recorded over 24,000 cases in last 24 hours.

Sergio Mattarella was re-elected for a second term as Italy's President on Saturday after he agreed to a request from Italian lawmakers to continue as the head of state. Notably, this comes after lawmakers failed to elect a successor to Mattarella despite seven rounds of voting in Parliament. Mattarella had earlier announced that he would not seek a second term.

The government has extended the tenure of IPO-bound LIC's Chairman MR Kumar by one more year, PTI reported. Kumar, whose tenure has been extended for the second time, will now reportedly continue as LIC Chairman till March 2023. LIC's IPO is likely to be India's biggest-ever and the government may seek a valuation of ₹15 lakh crore, Bloomberg earlier reported.


Telcos must offer at least 1 recharge plan with 30-day validity: TRAI

Telecom regulator TRAI has directed telecom companies to offer at least one plan voucher, one special tariff voucher and one combo voucher with 30-day validity. At least one plan voucher, one special tariff voucher, one combo voucher renewable on same date of every month must also be offered. "This would...facilitate consumers in making a more informed tariff-related choice," TRAI said.


Real estate body urges govt to reduce short-term capital gains tax in Budget

Federation of All India Real Estate Association (FAIRA) has urged government to bring down short-term capital gains tax from 30% to 20% in upcoming Budget. It sought an increase in home loan interest deduction from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh for tax rebate. "If...Budget can offer SOPs to make investment in housing more attractive...real estate sector will boom," it added.


India needs to invest 3% of GDP in research: Infosys Co-founder

Infosys Co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan speaking about his expectations from the upcoming Budget said India needs to invest about 3% of its GDP (gross domestic product) in research. "Currently, India invests about 0.7% of GDP in research," he added. "This is the direction India needs to take and get there in the next two to three years," Gopalakrishnan told Financial Express.

BJP to contest TN urban civic body polls alone: State party chief

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai announced on Monday that BJP will contest upcoming urban civic body polls alone. Annamalai said that BJP wants to solidify its base at the grassroots level in Tamil Nadu but asserted that the party's alliance with AIADMK will remain intact at the national level. The elections are slated to be held on February 19.

Tokyo's population drops for the first time in 26 years

Japan's capital Tokyo's population dropped by about 48,600 people to under 1.4 crore at the start of 2022 in the first decline in Tokyo's population in 26 years, Bloomberg reported citing Tokyo Metropolitan Government data. It comes as more companies turned to remote work amid COVID-19. A government survey showed 55% of companies in Tokyo have tried remote working practices.

 


UAE govt to charge corporate tax on business profits from June 2023

UAE, known as a tax haven and the regional headquarters for many multinational corporations, will tax business profits of over 3,75,000 dirhams (approximately ₹76.18 lakh) at 9% from June 2023. The move would pave the way for the introduction of a global minimum tax rate, UAE government said. UAE earlier switched Friday-Saturday weekends to Saturday-Sunday to align with global markets.

Centre bans Malayalam news channel MediaOne TV over security concerns

Union I&B Ministry has banned the telecast of Malayalam news channel MediaOne TV, which is backed by Jamaat-e-Islami, due to security reasons. As the channel went off the air on Monday, its editor Pramod Raman said they have started legal action against the ban. "We're suspending the broadcasting temporarily with hope that justice will prevail at last," the channel said.


India became 4th largest forex reserves holder in world in FY22: Economic Survey

The Economic Survey 2021-22 said that India became the fourth-largest foreign exchange reserves holder in the world after China, Japan, and Switzerland as of end November 2021. "Despite all the disruptions caused by the global pandemic, India's balance of payments remained in surplus throughout the last two years," it added. This allowed RBI to keep accumulating forex reserves, it said.


Economy little short of pre-pandemic levels: Principal Economic Advisor

Principal Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal said that the Indian economy is just a little short of where it was pre-pandemic. He added that even though health cost of the second COVID-19 wave was more severe, the economic cost was milder. He expects the Indian economy to have grown by 9.2% this year after a 7.3% contraction in the previous year.


BYJU'S looking to raise $750 million in pre-IPO funding: Report

India's most valuable startup BYJU'S is looking to raise a pre-IPO funding round of about $750 million to $1 billion, reported Bloomberg. The edtech startup, which was last valued at $21 billion, is in negotiations with at least three special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), the report said. BYJU'S is expected to unveil plans to go public via SPAC merger next month.


Power sector workers to hold nationwide protest against privatisation on Feb 1

All India Power Engineers Federation has said that power sector workers will hold a nationwide protest against the government's privatisation policies on February 1 on the call of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees & Engineers. They are demanding withdrawal of Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2021 and no privatisation of profit-making power departments in Union Territories.


Govt collects ₹1.38 lakh cr as GST in January, marks 15% YoY increase

The Centre's gross GST revenue for January 2022 rose 15% YoY to ₹1,38,394 crore, the Ministry of Finance said. This is the fourth consecutive month that GST collection has crossed the ₹1.30 lakh crore mark, with ₹1.17 lakh crore gross GST revenue collected in September 2021. The highest monthly GST collection at ₹1.39 lakh crore was recorded in April 2021.

Paytm Money has introduced “India’s first” intelligent messenger called ‘Pops’. The company has launched ‘Pops’, with which users can receive specific information related to their stocks, analysis about their portfolio, market news, and important market movements in an easy to consume format, all in one place.  The platform will also serve as a marketplace to offer sophisticated stock recommendations, news insights, and other services.  Paytm Money is partnering with InvestorAi to offer stock recommendations based on signals generated using artificial intelligence. Now, with Pops on the Paytm Money app, these investors can monitor their portfolios regularly and learn from the market movements with alerts curated for them.


Tata Group choose SBI, BoB and HDFC Bank to finance Air India's old debt 


Tata Group has chosen State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and HDFC Bank as preferred bankers for Air India. Recently Tata Group has taken over Air India from the government.  Air India is the largest international carrier out of India with an 18.6% market share. Tata Sons have availed of a Rs 10,000-crore loan from SBI and a Rs 5,000-crore loan from BoB. The loan from HDFC Bank is not known yet. The loans are unrated, unsecured, and pegged at 4.25% [interest rate] annually.  Tata Sons-promoted Talace has acquired Air India, offering Rs 18,000 crore that include Rs 15,300 crore for the carrier's existing debt and Rs 2,700 crore cash to be paid to the government. The new debt availed by the Tata Group will be used to refinance Air India's debt availed at over 10%.


Economic Survey 2021-22 Summary

Indian economy (GDP) is estimated to grow by 9.2 per cent in real terms in 2021-22.

GDP is projected to grow by 8- 8.5 per cent in real terms in 2022-23.

With the enhanced borrowings on account of COVID-19, the Central Government debt has gone up from 49.1 per cent of GDP in 2019-20 to 59.3 per cent of GDP in 2020-21 but is expected to follow a declining trajectory with the recovery of the economy.

Rs. 89,066 crores raised via 75 Initial Public Offering (IPO) issues in April-November 2021 is much higher than in any year in the last decade.

Foreign Exchange Reserves crossed US$ 600 billion in the first half of 2021-22 and touched US $ 633.6 billion as of December 31, 20221.

India’s overall score on the NITI Aayog SDG India Index and Dashboard improved to 66 in 2020-21 from 60 in 2019-20.

Tata Motors posted a consolidated net loss of ₹1,516.14 crore for Q3 FY22 as compared with profit after tax of ₹2,906.45 crore in Q3 FY21. It also reported a 4.5% YoY decline in consolidated revenues to ₹72,229 crore. Overall, the company posted a consolidated operating profit of ₹7,400 crore and a fall of 460 basis points in margin to 10.2%.


SBI listed the maiden issue of $300 million Formosa bonds on India INX


State Bank of India (SBI) has issued $300 million Formosa bonds and listed the issuance on India INX GIFT IFSC. The lender is the first Indian entity to raise money through Formosa Bond, which is a bond issued in Taiwan.  SBI was the first issuer whose Green bonds were dually listed in November 2021 on Luxembourg Stock Exchange through an MOU that has been entered into by both Exchanges.  This first successful issuance of Formosa Bond by any Indian commercial bank, is a testimony of the confidence reposed by the overseas investors into India's growth story and also in SBI.


SPMCIL opens new bank note printing lines at Nashik and Dewas 


Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) has set up ‘new banknote printing lines’ at its Currency Note Press, Nashik and Bank Note Press, Dewas. In India, four printing presses for printing and supply of Banknotes.  These are at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, Nasik in Maharashtra (owned by SPMCIL), Mysore in Karnataka, and Salboni in West Bengal (owned by Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL)).  SPMCIL, a Government of India owned Miniratna company, is engaged in the manufacture/production of Currency and Bank Notes, Security Paper, Non-Judicial Stamp Papers, Postal Stamps, Passport, Visa, Cheques, Bond, Warrant, Special Certificates with security features, Security Inks, Circulation & Commemorative Coins, Medallions, Refining of Gold & Silver, and Assay of Precious Metals among others.

Women’s Asia Cup Hockey 2022: India beat China to win Bronze


India defeated China, 2-0 to win the bronze medal at the 2022 Women’s Hockey Asia Cup tournament. The 2022 Women’s Hockey Asia Cup was the 10th edition of the quadrennial Women’s Hockey Asia Cup.  The tournament was held from January 21 to 28, 2022 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman. Japan defeated South Korea 4-2 in the final to win their third title at the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup tournament.


Australian Open 2022: Rafael Nadal beats Daniil Medvedev


Rafael Nadal (Spain) has defeated Daniill Medvedev (Russia) 2-6,6-7,6-4,6-4,7-5 to win the Men’s Singles title at the Australian Open 2022. This is his 21st Major title, becoming the first male player to do so.  In women’s tennis, Margaret Court (Australian) has 24 singles majors, an all-time record. In women's, World Number 1 Ashleigh Barty of Australia defeated Danielle Collins of the US, 6-3 7-6, to win women’s singles final title at the Australian Open 2022.

6th Pan Am Women Cup Hockey Championship: Argentina beat Chile


Argentina defeated Chile, 4-2 to win its 6th women’s field hockey championship title at the 2022 Women’s Pan American Cup.  The Women’s Pan American Cup is the quadrennial international championship of the Americas organized by the Pan American Hockey Federation.  The 2022 Women’s Pan Am Cup was the sixth edition of the championship. It was held from January 19 to 29, 2022 in Santiago, Chile. With this win both Argentina and Chile have sealed automatic qualification spots at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup, Spain and Netherlands 2022.

 

 


Ranji Trophy 2022 season to begin with league stage from February 16

Ranji Trophy 2022, which was earlier postponed due to rising COVID-19 cases in India, is set to begin with league stage to be held from February 16 to March 5, as per revised schedule by BCCI. It was originally scheduled to start from January 13. Knockouts will be held in June. The tournament was cancelled last year due to pandemic.


Sreejesh becomes 2nd Indian to win World Games Athlete of Year award

Indian men's hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who was part of the men's team that clinched the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics, won World Games Athlete of the Year award for 2021 on Monday. Notably, he became only the second Indian to receive the award. In 2020, Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal became first Indian to win it.

A book titled “Fearless Governance” authored by Kiran Bedi


The book titled ‘Fearless Governance’ authored by Dr Kiran Bedi has been released. She is the former Lt Governor of Puducherry and IPS (retd).  This book is based on the ground realities of nearly five years of service of Dr Bedi as Lt. Governor of Puducherry and her vast experience of 40 years in the Indian Police Service.  The author demonstrates the right practises of responsible governance. She brought about team spirit, collaboration, financial prudence, effective policing, bonding in services and decision making through fearless leadership. 74th Martyrs’ Day observed on 30 January 2022


Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed every year on January 30 in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House by Nathuram Godse in 1948.  This year nation observed 74th Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas. The day is observed to remember the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in the struggle for India’s independence and to pay our respects to them.  Notably, Martyrs’ Day is also observed in India on March 23 to pay respect to Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, who was hanged death on this day in 1931.'


World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day observed on 30th January


World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day (World NTD Day) is observed on January 30 every year to raise awareness about neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) as a critical public health challenge so that we can progress towards their elimination.  2022 theme is ‘Achieving health equity to end the neglect of poverty-related diseases’. The 2022 slogan is “From neglect to care”.  The first World NTD Day was held on 30 January 2020. The proposal to recognise the day was made by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).


World Leprosy Day 2022: 30 January


World Leprosy Day is observed globally on the last Sunday of January every year. In 2022, the World Leprosy Day falls on January 30, 2022.  The day is celebrated to raise global awareness of this deadly ancient disease and call attention to the fact that it can be prevented, treated and cured. In India, World Leprosy Day is celebrated every year on 30 January, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s death.  This year theme of World Leprosy Day 2022 is “United for Dignity”.
The day was initiated in 1954 by French philanthropist and writer, Raoul Follereau, as a tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi who had compassion for people afflicted with leprosy.

Educationist/social leader Baba Iqbal Singh Ji passes away


Iqbal Singh Kingra, who was an Indian socio-spiritual leader of the Sikh community and an educationalist passed away at the age of 95 years.  He was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2022 for his contributions in the field of social work. He established Eternal University in 2008and Akal University, Guru ki Kashi in 2015.
