what is Online Gaming ?💥
The evolution of gaming has seen many eras phase in and out,the rise of interest in online gaming has caused a gradual shift from traditional gaming methods to more modern, digitised versions. The online gaming world has been steadily rising over the past few years and is now experiencing a state of rapid increase that is the direct result of supply meeting demand, thanks to the evolution of virtual gaming companies and platforms. Because of the internet’s strong (and, at this point, likely unshakable) threshold as the entire world’s global connectivity platform, it has been able to provide the gaming industry with a unique opportunity to phase from one era into the next easily and without much backlash.
In last five years or so, if we see, gaming industry has flourished exponentially. The year 2018 saw the gaming industry rise to a whopping $137.9 billion and it is predicted to hit $180 billion by 2021, according to a market researcher Newzoo. At the same time we are witnessing a shift in the mobile gaming industry, especially with the arrival of recent titles like Fortnite and PUBG which has taken the world by storm including India. There are close to 2.3 billion gamers across the world and one of the biggest contributors to it is India. The reason for that is pretty simple; owning mobile phones are more viable than a gaming PC or console. Not to mention, the mobile phone is something that is with you every day.
But online gaming has adverse impacts as well. Addiction to it are leading to several physical and mental conditions, stress in teens, in particular. Violent video games are affecting their psychology and making them aggressive. All these factors lead to less social interaction, less physical activity, and poor academic and curricular performances. WHO(World Health Organisation) last year even classified Gaming Addiction as a “mental disorder”; after various researches all around the world on influence that online gaming has had over the past few years. India also which forms a huge market for online gaming platforms has seen exponential rise with some extremities as well in the form of games like PUBG, Blue Whale Challenge etc.
In the day and age we are in, it’s easy to say” technology spoils us”. But it’s only us who can and have to use it in a holistic way. Gaming and esports are on the rise as large scale industries and are not just “recreations” anymore. Solutions need to be found out for the younger generations in particular to prevent gaming addiction. All stakeholders , starting with parents, teachers, government agencies with online and social media platforms need to collaborate to curb the negatives of online gaming. Finding a balance like by moderation in behaviour, adapting to the challenges is the way forward.
